| Eat All You Want and Not Gain Weight by Marnie L. Pehrson When you are eating, do you ever stop to think about how many calories might be in your food? Take dried fruit like raisins for example, a quarter of a cup of raisins has the same amount of calories as 2 cups of grapes. Which one will fill you up more? The grapes have water in them, making them a low-energy dense food. Energy density means the number of calories in any given food. Fruits and vegetables are low energy dense foods. High fat foods are high energy dense. You can eat a lot more fruits and vegetables because they contain water and fiber. This will make you feel full even though you will have eaten fewer calories. This is great for people who rarely feel full. In their book, "Mayo Clinic of Healthy Weight," the Mayo Clinic has come up with a healthy weight food pyramid. It was designed to improve health and weight with low energy density foods. At the bottom of the pyramid are an unlimited amount of fruits and vegetables. It recommends eating healthy with the five food groups. For carbohydrates, whole grains are the best. This includes brown rice, whole wheat breads and whole grain pastas. When adding fat to your diet, monounsaturated fats are best, such as olive oil, raw nuts and fish. Bear in mind that "unlimited amounts of fruits and vegetables" excludes dried fruits and fruit juice, which contain hidden calories. A glass of orange juice for example, contains the juice of four oranges. A glass of orange juice would give you the calories of four oranges, but not fill you up nearly as much as one orange would. Whole foods are encouraged because they can fill you up without giving you as many calories. Processed foods often contain hidden calories. Although, they are a natural whole food, be careful of the amount of nuts you eat. They are high in calories. For example, you could eat one handful of raw nuts a day. In conclusion, if you want to eat healthier and feel more satisfied, add some raw fruits and vegetables to your diet. Marnie Pehrson helps people live healthier and happier lives by removing the toxins from their homes. For more information Click here.
