Henna Designs
Decorating the hands with henna is a cherished custom for women in Oman. For many women using henna is an Islamic alternative to Western nail polish. In fact, most women just don't feel fully dressed for the holidays or for weddings without it. Henna is often appied to the fingertips just to color the fingernails. Or it may be applied to cover the palms of the hand or the soles of the feet. On special occasions it is often applied in intricate designs on the hands and feet by piping it out through the narrow tip of a cone. Talented young ladies compete in making elaborate designs for brides, and henna salons are found in cities of all sizes.
Most gardeners have at least one henna shrub. The dried leaves of this plant are pulverized into fine powder and mixed with warm water and lemon juice to make a mud-like paste. Sometimes, "special" ingredients are added to darken the color. Our favorite additive is a teaspoon of alcolhol-free Rose#1 oil-based perfume. When that is not available we add a teaspoon of clove oil or finely ground cloves. A teaspoon of anything with Eucalyptus oil (like vapor rubs) works well, too. Powdered henna is sold in most suqs and ladies stores, and prepared henna (sold by the cone) is widely available, too.
